Patents expiring will propel growth of generics in neurodegenerative drugs market.

(PRWEB) August 12, 2007 -- Piribo, the online destination for business intelligence for the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, has now added a new report on the latest developments in the neurodegenerative disease and drug market.

"Neurodegenerative Disease Drug Market Analysis and Forecasts 2007" finds that drug trials in the neurodegenerative sector have yielded hopeful results, suggesting that the market is set for expansion. The report reveals that the Neurodegenerative market was worth over $16 billion in 2006, with growth anticipated to exceed $18 billion in 2007.

The report is a comprehensive study on the major neurodegenerative
diseases- Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Neuropathic pain. It also looks at rarer genetic disorders like Huntington Disease as well the progressive neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. It records how these diseases place financial pressures on national healthcare services.

Authors of the report explain that there is a worldwide ageing of the Baby Boom generation, coupled with a rise in longevity. These factors are major catalysts in the long-term revenue growth in the pharmaceutical/health care sector, they claim.

The study analyses periods of sustained revenue growth in the 2007-2012 timeframe, and turns the spotlight on how patents expiring on major blockbuster drugs in the neurodegenerative segment in 2012, will boost the revenues in the generics market.

Market leaders like Biogen Idec, Elan, Eli Lilly, Novartis and Pfizer are expected to see major leaps in global annual earnings following advancements in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector, say the authors.

Analysts have addressed key issues affecting the neurodegenerative market such as exploring whether stem cell research is the answer to these diseases. They have also predicted the most successful drugs in the next five years, and highlighted the current therapies that show the most revenue generating potential.

The report pinpoints the regions that show the highest prevalence of the diseases today and extrapolate available data to make predictions of disease incidence up to 2020. It also profiles the market leaders in neurodegenerative therapy, outlines current approved therapies and identifies the first line drugs coming off patent by 2012. The study values the market for 2007 and forecasts how much it will be worth in the next five years.

Parallel trade all set to get a grip on the U.S pharmaceutical market.

(PRWEB) August 12, 2007 -- Piribo, the online destination for business intelligence for the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, has now added a new report on the latest developments in parallel trade in the United States, and how it affects the pharmaceutical industry.

"Parallel Trade - US Lawmakers allow imported prescriptions drugs" forecasts that parallel trade is on the verge of moving from the EU into other global markets. The EU has long supported the practice claiming it is an important driving force for market integration where there are important differences in price between member states.

Parallel trade is a controversial topic in the pharmaceutical industry today, and has been a subject of much debate since it has both supporters and detractors. But does parallel trade diminish the quality and safety of drugs?

The report highlights how it is impossible to ascertain the origin of an imported drug through this system. This uncertainty, says the report, could lead to scenarios where consumers believe that imported drugs enter the US from Canada, UK or European countries, when in reality the source country for the drug is elsewhere. It also looks at issues surrounding the repackaging of drugs.

The study surveys whether developing countries perceive parallel trade as a benefit for cheap drugs and predicts how long this is perception is likely to continue. It also assesses how much pharmaceutical companies stand to lose this year from the practice. Analysts take into account how parallel trade is going to shape up as the US is seen as a favourable market, and that the EU is soon going to comprise 27 countries.

Authors note that pharmaceutical companies have long pinned the blame for huge losses in revenue, which in turn affects innovation, on parallel trade. The practice is also seen as the gateway for counterfeit drugs entering the supply chain, they say.

The report cites the recent removal of three batches of counterfeit drugs by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK. These were copies of Eli Lilly's antipsychotic drug, Zyprexa and Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol Myers Squibb's Plavix.

"Parallel Trade - US Lawmakers allow imported prescriptions drugs" addresses key question such as why pharmaceutical companies are not being protected by regulatory bodies, and how far companies can legally protect themselves. It looks at how price linking can help stall parallel trade without significant revenue drops. Primarily, the study outlines how parallel trade or reimportation affects the US and Canada.

"We are thrilled to offer one of the best free audio players for typists on the market for the Linux platform," said Stephanie Lee, marketing manager for the Australian company. "Although we have worked hard over the last few years to make our software compatible with Linux operating systems through the WINE emulator we recognised the need to start porting our applications for Linux users. One of our biggest challenges was to make the installation as generic as possible to suit all the main flavours of Linux."

Express Scribe is an audio player specifically designed for the playback of dictation or other audio recordings. It features variable speed playback, automatically checks and downloads files from FTP servers, email or a local area network and supports a large range of audio file formats including wav, mp3, wma, Olympus, Sony, Phillips and Sanyo digital formats as well and many more. Audio from video files can also be loaded for subtitle work.

"Of course the latest version of Express Scribe for Linux is free," said Stephanie. "It has all the features of the Windows version including the Scribe Mini which allows typists to reduce the size of the application to roughly an inch (2.5 cm) and it can be controlled by foot pedals and hot keys."

NCH Swift Sound is a leader in business audio technology. Since 1993 the software development team has released more than 40 Windows, Mac, Linux, Palm and Pocket PC applications which are now leaders in their classes and have been awarded for software excellence.
